Virtual study tour on "Electricity Storage Technologies"

As part of Tunisia's energy transition objectives, which include integrating 30% renewable energy into the electricity mix by 2030, storage technologies have been identified as key solutions to address the challenges of integrating renewable energy into the grid.

In this context, a virtual study trip on storage technologies took place from October 26 to 28, 2021, in Tunis. The event brought together actors and representatives from Tunisia's public and private sectors involved in renewable energy, providing them with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of storage technologies.

On the first day, participants were introduced to storage projects developed in Germany, followed by a technical and economic comparison of different storage options. Discussions also covered the management of renewable energy power plants with storage on the transmission grid. The day concluded with an overview of centralized battery storage technologies.

The second day focused on decentralized storage, featuring an overview of developments in both Tunisia and Germany, along with a presentation on battery storage technologies and quality assurance. In the afternoon, B2B networking sessions provided a platform for participants to connect and exchange insights.

The final day centered on STEP technologies, and before the event concluded, recently developed solutions such as thermal storage were presented, offering perspectives on the future of storage technologies in the coming years.

This program was carried out within the framework of the Tunisian-German Energy Partnership, mandated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mines (MIEM), in cooperation with the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), the National Agency for Energy Conservation (ANME), the Tunisian-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK-Tunis), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
